PART 7 - TYPES OF LEAVE 

27. ANNUAL LEAVE

27.1 Annual leave entitlement

27.1.1 A Flight Attendant accrues 42 days’ annual leave (inclusive of Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays) for each completed year of service.

27.1.2 In determining what is a complete year of service or a pro-rata entitlement for annual leave purposes any absence from duty (other than absence due to annual leave, long service leave, sick leave with pay and leave pursuant to workers’ compensation legislation) does not count as service.

27.2 Payment for annual leave

27.2.1 A Flight Attendant taking annual leave is entitled to be paid in advance for the period of absence as calculated on the base weekly rate of pay.

27.2.2 A loading of 17.5% in addition to the base salary prescribed in clause 18 - Rates of pay, and 19.1 and 19.2 must be paid at the time leave is taken.

27.3 When annual leave falls due

A Flight Attendant’s annual leave entitlement falls due at the rate of one month in every 9 months of service.

27.4 Taking Annual Leave

27.4.1 Leave Rosters

27.4.1(a) Leave rosters will be provided by the Employer in 9 month cycles.

27.4.1(b) The cycle will repeat in the same sequence in subsequent years.

27.4.1(c) Vacancies for leave must be posted at least 4 months and not more than 6 months in advance of a leave period.

27.4.2 Leave details will be posted so as to be available to Flight Attendants not less than

27.4.3 Allocation of Leave

27.4.3(a) On commencement of employment a Flight Attendant is given an initial due month. Subsequent due months are 9 months after the initial due month.

27.4.3(b) Where more requests are received than can be accommodated in a given leave month, due month will be used to determine which request will be accepted. Pursers/Cabin Managers/Customer Service Managers Short-Haul) will be considered separately.

27.4.3(c) Annual leave is allocated as follows:

27.4.3(c)(i) In order of request to Flight Attendants whose number one choice is for their due month, until all such nominations are awarded or, vacancies as advertised are filled.

27.4.3(c)(ii) In order of request to all other Flight Attendants (that is, Flight Attendants whose number one choice is for a month other than their due month).

27.4.3(d) Flight Attendants who accrue leave in excess of their normal accrual may elect to take such accrued leave by agreement within 15 months of accrual date.

27.4.3(e) Exchange of leave allocations between Flight Attendants of the same classification and base will be considered

27.4.3(f) Despite the provision of this clause, a flight attendant may elect, with the consent of the employer, to take annual leave in single day periods not exceeding ten days in any calendar year at a time or times agreed between them.

27.5 Recall from annual leave

An Employer is not entitled to alter a published leave roster or recall a Flight Attendant from annual leave or other leave, except by agreement.

27.6 Compassionate grounds

A Flight Attendant may be granted annual leave or change of leave on compassionate grounds.

27.7 Illness during annual leave

A Flight Attendant:

must be allowed to take that period against sick leave credits and have the annual leave credit adjusted accordingly. The sick leave documentation must be submitted within 15 days of return to duty.

27.8 Proportionate annual leave on termination of employment

A Flight Attendant who:

27.8.1 after one month’s continuous service in the first qualifying 12 month period with an Employer lawfully leaves the employment of the Employer or the employment is terminated by the Employer through no fault of the Flight Attendant; or

27.8.2 after 12 month’s continuous service with an Employer, leaves the employment of the Employer or the employment is terminated by the Employer for any reason
